The Society was founded in 1754 by William Shipley, a painter and social activist.
He brought together a group of individuals to propose a manifesto for Society
"to embolden enterprise, enlarge science, refine arts, improve our manufactures
and extend our commerce".
Today the RSA is an independent, non-aligned, multi-disciplinary registered
charity with over 22,000 Fellows worldwide. We encouarge sustainable economic
development and the release of human potential through a program of projects
and a lively lecture program across the United Kingdom and the United States.
Primarily based in London, the US Fellowship reflects and enhances the core
program with a lively program of events. The prestigious RSA Journal is published
bi-monthly and is automatically sent to all Fellows. It reports on lectures,
RSA programmes and events. The London House offers a range of conference and
catering facilities which are available for Fellows and the general public.
